Battelle is seeking a Chemist to work full time within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS). DLS develops laboratory methods to diagnose disease, test for exposure to harmful chemicals, help other labs with improving the quality of their tests, and respond to public health emergencies. Selected staff member is needed to fill program requirements to assist with methods to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, by providing sample analysis and method development support. The selected applicant will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance and will work on-site at the CDC Chamblee Campus in Atlanta, Georgia.
This position is contingent upon award of work.
- Perform sample preparation and analysis using existing methods and assist in development of methods.
- Prepare solutions and standards, aliquot and prepare samples using automation equipment.
- Operate and maintain analytical equipment to include problem solving and troubleshooting activities.
- Evaluate laboratory data to assess the analytical quality of the laboratory methods.
- Provide support for inventory, sample storage, laboratory automation and other duties as assigned.
- Apply DLS statistical quality control rules to each analytical run using existing database for quality control data.
- Analyze data, submit results, and generate reports.
- Maintain inventories, write standard operating procedures and analytical measurement procedures.
- Respond in timely fashion to communications from collaborators.
- Conduct all activities in line with relevant ISO, CLIA and DLS guidelines and create and maintain relevant documents.
- Adhere to universal precautions with regard to the handling of biological samples and biological waste.
- Adhere to CDC/NCEH/DLS and CLIA guidelines regarding laboratory protocols and quality control.
- Adhere to the CDC/NCEH/DLS policy of treating all data as confidential.
- Adhere to the CDC/NCEH/DLS and Battelle policy of laboratory safety and security.
- BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related scientific field with 1+ years’ experience.
- Technical knowledge and experience with analytical procedures and instrumentation such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, clinical analyzers, and automation platforms.
- High level of skill using Microsoft Office products such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook.
- Excellent organization skills to ensure sample analysis deadlines are met.
- Ability to work with clinical samples, including human blood, plasma, and urine.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory safety.
- Good problem-solving, communication and writing skills.
- Ability to work and coordinate well with a team.
