About Our District
The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Madison schools are committed to making this district a place where every child thrives.
Purpose of Position:
The CFO is responsible for advising the superintendent and school board on the financial and budget matters of the district, and administering the finances in compliance with federal, state, local and Board of Education laws. Directs the business/finance functions including accounting, budgeting and grants management. Leads the division in implementing best practices in public sector financial management and planning. Performs long and short-range planning, oversees special projects, and provides analyses to support strategic priorities, projects and investments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position is directly responsible for directing, supervising, and exercising responsibility for all business services functions through subordinate staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees the District’s budget development process.
Liaising to Board of Education budget and finance committee activities.
Providing the Superintendent of Schools and Board of Education with accounting and budgeting information.
Attending Board of Education and community meetings to present information regarding District business services, maintenance and repair to the Board of Education.
Serving as Secretary to the Board of Education and District Custodian of Records.
Receiving and directing all legal papers served on the District.
Overseeing the operating and maintenance of District facilities.
Authorizing funding to make repairs due to exigent circumstances.
Planning for and directing the acquisition and construction of new facilities including working with architects, engineers, attorneys (bond counsel), regulatory agencies, financial advisors and professional consultants to develop final plans.
Working with contractors regarding capital improvement projects.
Preparing mandated reports for state and federal agencies.
Developing requests for proposals to secure consultants for specialized work.

Required Education and Experience to Perform Essential Job Functions:
Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field.
Five (5) years progressively responsible business management and administrative experience in a public education setting or large organization, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
All positions require experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.
Preferred Qualification:
Currently certified or eligible to be certified by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a School Business Administrator (08).
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under general safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury.
