Job Overview:
The Hospitalist position at SEARHC is a full-time, full spectrum role that has been structured in a way that fosters a better work life balance for employees who choose to work less and relax more, here in Southeast Alaska. Additional shifts and pay are available to those seeking extra income, all shifts are reimbursed. Shifts include primary coverage of the Med/Surg & ICU, Emergency Department, and Night Shift.
This role provides comprehensive health care services for inpatients and emergency patients at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center and serves as a community liaison and regional medical center for communities and clinics throughout Southeast Alaska This role requires high-level decision-making abilities for patients of all ages, from neonates to adults, caring for patients with medical and psychiatric concerns as well as laboring patients (FP only).
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages in the Emergency Room, Inpatient, ICU, and OB/Nursery departments at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center. There is 24h OB and Surgical backup.
- Provide as needed Obstetrical care to L&D patients. (Based on qualifications)
- Perform necessary procedures, based on clinical analysis of patient needs. Providers are encouraged to perform procedures where qualified (ex. Central Lines, Paracentesis, & Point of Care Ultrasound).
- Serves as consultative liaison via phone or video to village health care providers, local residential programs, and advises/accepts transfers from referring sites throughout Southeast Alaska.
- Participates in medical staff functions as requested including quality assurance reviews and discussion of cases and outcomes via participation in the monthly departmental meeting.
- Use of Cerner EMR for all patient documentation and ordering.

Qualifications:
Education/Experience
- M.D. or D.O. degree, along with satisfactory completion of an accredited Family Practice, Medicine/Pediatrics, or Emergency Medicine residency.
- Must be board certified or board eligible.
License/Certification
- Alaska Medical License issued by the Alaska State Medical Board
- BLS, ACLS, & NRP/ALSO (if applicable) certification
- ATLS required within 6 months of starting
- PALS certification strongly desired
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to thrive in a group practice where discussions of patient care at signout are common.
- Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based allopathic theories and therapies. (This is a group of docs that uses guideline-based care and there is free access to UpToDate and may other resources)
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to order diagnostic tests effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to work as the sole provider as well as with the support of other physicians.
- Willingness to learn and grow continually with the broad base that remote rural medicine presents (exciting, challenging, rewarding, but sometimes uncomfortable).
