Position: Horseback Riding Coordinator
Function:
The Horseback Riding Coordinator will be Responsible for developing, coordinating, and evaluating all riding program activities. The Coordinator with work with the Camp Director to plan, direct and supervise the horse program.
Qualification:
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must have one or more of the following types of training:
o UCONN’s Camp Instructors’ Horsemanship Safety Clinic. (Required)
o Been accredited by the CHA or has completed a course in techniques of riding instruction.
o At least 2 years of experience teaching or assisting in teaching riding lessons, in class of 5 or more riders.
Ability to work as a team member with other counselors.
Must be able to teach Western and English.
Must be able to communicate effectively with other counselors.
Experience working with children and teens.
Responsible, trustworthy, reliable, good morals, FLEXIBLE, hardworking , willing to learn
CPR/First Aid recommended.
Must have enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control.
Must have the ability to assess, guide, and supervise campers, teen leaders, and other staff.
Knowledge/ experience in horse health care.
Must be organized, observant and aware of your surroundings.
Responsibilities:
Group supervision of campers with attention to all of the following: program, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development.
Be concerned for the social adjustment of EACH camper.
Promote camper participation in ALL activities.
Monitor and report any health or medical concerns to the Camp Nurse.
Teach and assist with the camp programs and encourage camper participation.
Set a good example in ALL you do at camp. Camp is a fun learning experience.
Attend and participate in all staff meetings.
Work with the camp director and other camp staff to iron out difficulties with facilities, programs and campers.
Provide Leadership and guidance to Teen Leaders working in activities.
Help develop, carry out and evaluate a camp program that reflects the goals of camping and the 4-H pledge.
Assist with chores for camp clean up.
Follow all policies and guidelines as explained in the WT 4H Camp Staff Manual.
PARTICIPATE in all activities with your campers. Encourage and facilitate your camper’s participation in all activities by implementing appropriate strategies, such as visual aids and reinforcements.
Participate in pre-camp staff training. Become familiar with and implement camp policies, procedures, and philosophy as stated in the Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp Staff Manual, and learn the role of the camp counselor.
BE ON TIME for all camp activities and meetings. This is a sign of respect for the people you are working with.
Accept added responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Camp Director to ensure the safety and well-being of every person involved in the Camp’s activities.
Specific Responsibilities:
Work with Horses before camp starts. Usually, they arrive 3-4 days prior to camp.
Plan, develop and organize all aspects of the horse activity.
Maintain a clean and safe environment in and around the stables.
Set up barn at the beginning of the summer for optimum use.
If possible help pick out horses in the late spring.
Provide direct care for the horses including feeding, cleaning, health and safety.
Work with other horse staff to delegate responsibilities.
Teach and monitor proper use of equipment and other materials.
Help each camper advance in skill level while in the horse program.
Do weekly or daily checklists and make sure they get turned into the Program Coordinator on Fridays.
Establish Rules/Expectations and Consequences for campers under your Supervision
Submit material requests in a timely manner to the program coordinator or camp director. Most ordering is done at the beginning of the summer.
Evaluate current season and make recommendations for following year and take inventory to put in Final report.
