Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the Isenberg School of Management (ISOM), the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Advising will assist the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs to provide oversight and strategy for the programs, services, and initiatives designed to enhance student success, retention, and advancement. This professional position will bear the primary responsibility and oversight for directing and coordinating all academic advising and academic support functions in the Isenberg Undergraduate Programs office and provide direct supervision of three (3) managing advisors. The Assistant Dean assists students, faculty, advisors, and occasionally parents (with FERPA release) with issues pertaining to academic policy, progress towards degree, and academic standing.


Essential Functions

  • Serves as the Academic Dean for undergraduate students, exercising Dean’s authority in matters concerning undergraduate students including, but not limited to:
    • Academic Discipline
    • Appeals for immediate reinstatement
    • Advising follow up with students on academic discipline
    • Petitions to the Committee on Admissions and Records
    • University Withdrawals
    • Approvals of Satisfactory Academic Progress Plans for Financial Aid requests
    • Approvals to exceed 10/12 semesters
    • Late course withdrawal petitions
    • Re-enrollment application approvals
    • Late course enrollment petitions
    • P/F grading petition
    • Exceptions to college core requirements
    • Grade change approvals
    • No Record Drop requests
    • Third Repeat of Course permission approvals
  • Serves as a resource and coordinates with managing advisors in Isenberg to support students.
    • Works with Department Heads/Chairs, Managing Advisors, and Honors program directors regarding School and major curriculum requirements. Serves as a resource to Managing Advisors or faculty facing student issues that are complex, either psychologically or from a policy standpoint. Directly supports students facing particular personal or academic difficulty, and meets with students to discuss issues that include but are not limited to:
      • Separation from the university or return from separation
      • Chronic academic struggles (developing academic goals and plans; connecting students with resources for academic support)
      • Health and mental health issues that influence academic success
      • Support for students managing a Title IX claim
  • Dissemination of academic information to students.
    • Responsible for regular communications to students regarding academic calendar reminders, opportunities, etc. Ensures that students are aware of essential academic information such as core academic regulations regarding course registration, withdrawals, repeats, etc. Communicates with affected students regarding their responsibilities such as completion of Incomplete grades.
  • Oversees special programs in the Isenberg School of Management.
    • Oversees the Isenberg Fellows program, a first-year Residential Academic Program, including oversight of the curriculum, faculty instructors, housing accommodations, extracurricular programs and community service activities.
    • Oversees the Ernst & Young Partners in Education Program (PIE, to support recruitment and retention of students from underrepresented backgrounds).
  • Serves as Isenberg Undergraduate Programs Lead on university policy and program adherence.
    • Connects with students and colleagues with various undergraduate initiatives within the colleges and throughout the university, advocating for undergraduates, and addressing policy exceptions or violations. These activities include regular partnering with, and mandates from:
      • Registrar’s Office, for policy implementation or individual student issues
      • Dean of Students Office
      • Center for Counseling & Psychological Health
      • University Health Services
      • Academic Departments
      • Disability Services
      • Commonwealth Honors College
      • Athletics
      • Student Success
  • Participates in college and university committees.
    • Attends scheduled meetings of the Undergraduate Deans Council. Runs Undergraduate Advisor meetings. Engages as appropriate in other cross campus activities that support Isenberg undergraduate initiatives including appropriate Faculty Senate Councils and other Ad Hoc committees focusing on student support.

Other Functions

  • Program analysis, continual improvement, strategic planning and reporting.
  • Application of data analytics for student outreach and intervention.
  • Serves as backup to the Managing Advisors as needed including but not limited to the following functions on an occasional basis: dean’s presentations for New Student Orientation, performing dean’s functions during NSO advising sessions, and participating in admissions/yield events.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in education, counseling, business, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in college level programs focused on student academic success and progress.
  • Able to successfully interact with a student body representing a range of socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Understanding and appreciation of science and science education including the roles of research and undergraduate research experience in the university.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the goals and values of an undergraduate liberal arts education within a major research university.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for current principles and methods of academic advising.
  • Able to fulfill responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Familiarity with UMass Amherst student advising data platforms.
  • Background in UMass Amherst academic policies.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm.
  • Occasional nights and weekends are required.
  • This position has the opportunity for a flexible work schedule, which is defined by the University as a schedule that allows employees to adjust the start and end times of their work day, but maintains the total number of hours worked in a day or week. As this position is non-unit, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees Non-Unit (Professional/or Classified) Employee Personnel Policy.
